This is the story of Princeton, a bright-eyed college grad who comes to New York with dreams of success and world changing ideas. He soon discovers that life is not as easy as college portrayed it to be, and he soon finds others in the same predicament. He settles on Avenue Q, similar to Sesame Street and rents an apartment from superintendent Gary Coleman. With a variety of characters and puppetry, Princeton and his new friends struggle to create a niche for themselves in this crazy, big world. They are determined to find their place in this world and in their lives.
Avenue Q was nominated for 6 Tony Awards for the 2003 Broadway season. Avenue Q took home 3 awards for Best Musical, Best Original Score (Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx) and Best Book of a Musical (Jeff Whitty). Avenue Q beat out the high-ranking front-runner Wicked for the coved Tony Award.
Avenue Q opened off Broadway at the Vineyard Theatre in March of 2003 and has been on Broadway since July 2003. All of the puppets seen and heard in the musical were designed and constructed by the original cast member Rick Lyon, who had previously worked on Sesame Street as a puppeteer. Several of the characters are recognizable as parodies of classic Sesame Street characters, such as Bert and Ernie and the Cookie Monster. But Mr. Lyon defends his characters as loving representations of the beloved children's characters. In fact, Mr. Lyon presented his characters to the family of the late Jim Henson before the musical was staged.
The songs, dealing with issues such as racism, Internet porn, money, homosexuality, and sex are not often the topics of musicals, but, in Avenue Q, they follow the character's day-to-day struggles and successes. Despite the child-like nature of the puppets, Avenue Q is the musical for today's adults.
For a spectacular send-up to Sesame Street, South Park and today's most vexing adult issues, Avenue Q tickets are your ticket for a live look at the musical for the generation. With fun, puppets, a fabulous cast of puppeteers and actors, and the utilization of television and video, Avenue Q is the most original and creative musical on Broadway. Don't miss out on Avenue Q tickets at the Golden Theatre.
