From Classroom to Curtain Call: The Inspiring Tale of Linda Aziza Miller

When Linda Aziza Miller was just a teenager navigating the New York City Public School system, she stumbled upon a music appreciation class that changed her life. While her classmates teased the instructor, Miller found a treasure trove of Broadway magic hidden in his lessons. “He taught Broadway songs, and I loved Broadway songs,” she reminisced, “I never knew it until this teacher introduced me to them.” Fast forward, and Miller has transformed her passion into a profession, better known as Miss Aziza, now dazzling audiences as the second keyboardist in the orchestra of “Hell’s Kitchen.”

But what’s the story behind her role in “Hell’s Kitchen”? It’s more than just coincidence! During her enriching career, Miller taught music at Manhattan’s Professional Performing Arts School, where she had the privilege of mentoring a young Alicia Keys. In fact, Miller’s influence inspired the character of Miss Liza Jane, the piano teacher played with Tony Award-winning prowess by Kecia Lewis. In the musical’s orchestra, Miller truly embodies the “fingers” of Miss Liza Jane.

“Alicia called me up and said one of the featured actresses was playing the character of the piano teacher, and she didn’t play piano herself,” Miller shared. “So Alicia envisioned me actually playing the piano parts that this Miss Liza Jane was supposed to be playing.” Talk about a role reversal—the student has indeed hired the teacher!

Miller’s journey mirrors Keys’ in many ways. “Music has always been a part of my household,” she reflected. Both women grew up enveloped in a symphony of sounds; Keys with her performer mother in artist housing at Manhattan Plaza, and Miller attending the esteemed High School of Music & Art, while Keys graced the halls of PPAS.
